Planning a Golf Simulator Bay: Space, Ceiling and Layout

Key space and layout questions for a residential or club golf simulator bay.

Measure the room first

A simulator needs enough width for a full swing, enough depth for the hitting position, screen or impact area and ball flight, and enough ceiling height for the longest club. Requirements differ by system, so use the manufacturer minimums for the model you choose and add margin for left-handed and right-handed players.

Choose the system type

Launch monitors and simulator packages differ in how they track the ball and club, and in how much room they need. Some work best with a projector and screen, others with a hitting mat and a side or overhead sensor. Compare tracking approach, software, and the space each one needs.

Plan the finishes

Lighting, flooring, wall treatment and acoustics change how the bay feels and performs. Plan a projector throw distance, enclosure and netting, and power and network points before the walls close up.

Clubs and commercial bays

For clubs and hospitality, plan for booking, durability and cleaning. A bay used by many players has different needs from a private one.
